CAS Term Glossary

Alternate ID: A functionality found in DARwin where an alternate identity can be attached to a course or requirement. An example of an Alternate ID would be a number representing a state wide numbering system.

Alternate Zip: An additional Zip Code entered on the My Profile section of CAS. This is used in the Course Equivalencies section of CAS if searching for a school within a certain proximity.

Applied/Applicable Credits: These are courses that apply to the chosen program at the school of your choice. A course may transfer, but may not necessarily apply to the program of study.

Accepted Credits: Courses that have been deemed acceptable to be awarded credit at the receiving institution.

CAS: Course Applicability System

CAS Participating School:  A school that has licensed CAS.  These schools have the ability to show course equivalencies and create planning guides. 

Course List: A list of courses offered at a school that is maintained by the school themselves. This list can be used when adding courses in the My Courses section of CAS.

Course Number: The number of the department and course number. For example, the Course Number for ENGL 101 is "101". See Department Abbreviation

Department Abbreviation: The portion of the department and course number which signifies in which academic department/subject the course is taught. For example, the Department Abbreviation for ENGL 101 is "ENGL". See Course Number

Equivalencies: What a course is equal to at another institution. A course can have a direct equivalency, which is a specific course offered at the institution, or can be deemed equivalent to elective credit.

Planning Guide: An unofficial report which displays the requirements needed to complete a specific academic program offered at the school you've selected. A Planning Guide can also display where courses established in the My Courses section of CAS apply to the specific programs.

Planning Guide with Equivalencies:  An unofficial report that will show you the requirements needed to complete a specific program as well as equivalencies for other courses between the school the planning guide is for and a selected school.  This is not available for all schools.

Program: An academic program of study offered at a selected CASParticipatingSchool. Programs of study are offered at various levels. For example: Certificate, Associate Degree, Bachelor Degree, etc.

Requirements: Specific subjects and/or courses that are required to be taken and satisfactorily completed to complete the program of study.

School ID: The abbreviation for the school the user created an account with. Formerly known as "UNIQ."

Transient Student: A student who is taking courses at an institution with the intention of transferring them back to the school where they are attempting to obtain a degree.

Transferable Credits: Courses that have been deemed acceptable to be awarded credit at the receiving institution.

User ID: A unique login name established by the user when they create a member account.
